Growing space nears completion
The edging has gone in against the concrete retaining wall with a gravel gap to give a narrow walk area up the side.
We debated this for quite a while - the original idea was that it was unsafe to use that as a walk area.
The concrete wall dips up the slope and soil would have moved over the edge if there wasn't something there to hold it in. Also the wall isn't the same thickness all the way along so it would have meant a wavy board if it was right up to the wall.
It seemed to make sense to have a narrow walk way to make the best use of the concrete retaining wall (and use some of the excess gravel we have about the place).
We had already moved the main path over slightly closer to the raised stone wall against our neighbour's garden. That means the left hand bed looking up the slope can be accessed from the main path, and the right hand wider growing bed can be accessed from the main path and the retaining wall side.
We discovered as we dug in for the retaining wall edging that there is a significant amount of 20mm limestone gravel in the soil along the retaining wall run. We will be removing that by digging it out soon, otherwise things won't grow at all along that edge.
